Last week I was invited by Sherman to check out the Li’l Cheese Steak Spot in the Royal Center Mall food court. The Li’l Cheese Steak Spot serves up their own twist on the American cheese steak, what makes them unique is how they have introduced Mediterranean flavors to this classic sandwich. Everything including the sauces, salads and bread are made fresh everyday and each sandwich is cooked to order and you can taste that commitment to freshness when you dig into your eats.

We started with a sample of their 2 salads offered, the Black-Eyed Pea salad and a Tomato salad. The black-eyed pea salad is a combination of peas, onions, olives and cilantro dressed with lemon juice and olive oil. This is the kind of home cooking I enjoyed when I was spending time down South in Atlanta, a handful of ingredients prepared simply. The salad itself really did put the black-eyed peas front and center with their earthy flavor, the olives added just enough saltiness and the dressing did add brightness without being heavy.

The tomato salad was simply prepared with chopped tomatoes, diced onions and parsley and dressed with the same lemon olive oil vinaigrette as the black-eyed pea salad. Again putting the main ingredient front and center this salad like the other was light and refreshing.

When we saw Gumbo on the menu I knew we had to give it a try. I’ve had some great gumbo in the United States but not so much since coming back to Canada so when I opened the container my eyes lit up when I saw that deep brown roux. The gumbo itself had chicken, sausage and okra in it along with a silky roux thickened stock. Flavor wise this gumbo was savory without being to spicy and had nice chunks of sausage, chicken and okra in it. Overall it was hearty and filling without landing in your stomach like a brick.

Moving on to the main event we shared both the Cheese Steak and Pork and Cheese Sandwiches on preservative free artisan bread from Baguette and Co. They use thinly shaved rib-eye steak for the cheese steak and slow roasted pork for the pork and cheese. All sandwiches made to order with grilled onions, melted cheese, fresh tomatoes and banana peppers and you have your choice of sauces-dairy based house sauce and a delicious salsa verde. The beef filled sandwich was really good and would satisfy anyone who likes a steak and cheese sandwich, the meat was really tender, seasoned lightly and the house sauce complimented the other ingredients. Mine and Sherman’s favorite was the pork and cheese sandwich with its succulent roasted pork and delicious brightly flavored salsa verde which added a great pop of herbaceous garlicky flavor.

Overall we really enjoyed the eats from Li’l Cheese Steak Spot and they’re a welcomed sight in the Royal Center Food Court, the eats are fresh and delicious and you can really taste the passion the owners have for delivering a tasty sandwich free of additives and junk. When you standing in the food court staring at the famous chain that serves up long sandwiches filled with prepackaged toppings and the Li’l Cheese Steak Spot is next door I’m going to the spot where I can pronounce all the ingredients in my sandwich!
